India take a 2-1 series lead over England thanks to a seven-wicket victory in the third one-day international between the two teams.

Alastair Cook's England fell to a seven-wicket defeat during their third one-day international against India in Ranchi this afternoon.

The tourists opened the batting in the Indian state of Jharkhand, but none of their batsman was able to build a significant innings.

Skipper and opener Cook was trapped lbw by Shami Ahmed for 17, while Ian Bell was bowled for 25 by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Yorkshire youngster Joe Root proved to be England's top run-scorer, producing a knock of 39 from 57 deliveries before he was caught by India captain MS Dhoni.

When Jade Dernbach was out for a duck, England were all out for 155 runs from just 42.2 overs.

In reply, Gautam Gambhir got India's innings off to a positive start by scoring 33 runs. However, the opener was unable to make a further contribution as he was caught by Root off the bowling of James Tredwell.

India's main batsman though was Virat Kohli, who recorded his 22nd ODI half-century on his way to making 77. He was still at the crease when Dhoni struck the winning runs with more than 20 overs to spare.
