Alastair Cook's men resumed day four with a lead of 220 runs and they quickly stretched that advantage to over 400 with the help of a century from Gary Ballance.

James Anderson failed to take a wicket in seven overs and remains one short of equalling Ian Botham's England record of 383 in Tests.

Chasing a notional 438 to win, West Indies put up a fight, though they lost Darren Bravo for 32 late in the day thanks to a stunning Chris Jordan catch, as they closed on 98-2.

Devon Smith, who added 83 with Bravo for the second wicket, will resume on 59 on the final day.
