Alastair Cook is out for five as England reach stumps on 43-1 in reply to India's 457 total on day two of the first Test at Trent Bridge.

Alastair Cook continued his poor form by getting dismissed for just five runs at the beginning of England's reply after India were bowled all out for 457 on day two of the first Test at Trent Bridge.

The hosts struggled to break up a prolific partnership between Bhuvneshwar Kumar and India's number 11 Mohammed Shami, who earned his maiden Test half-century and finished unbeaten on 51.

A knock of 58 from 161 deliveries from Kumar helped India increase their total, but after a frustrating wait for England, Moeen Ali was able to send the batsman packing after he chipped the ball into the hands of Joe Root.

Cook, who has not scored a century for over a year, opened the batting alongside Sam Robson in England's reply, but his time was short-lived after Shami's delivery hit the Essex batsman's thigh pad and deflected down onto the stumps.

After leaving on just five runs, Cook was replaced with Gary Ballance, who was able to steady the hosts' attack alongside Robson as the pair reached stumps unbeaten on 15 and 20 respectively.

England, who will resume play on 43-1 tomorrow, trail by 414 runs in the first innings.
