England have built up a convincing score of 348-3 against West Indies on day one of the inaugural day-night Test in the United Kingdom.

Alastair Cook and Joe Root both starred with the bat at Edgbaston by hitting centuries, while Dawid Malan was 27 not out by the end of play.

Opener Mark Stoneman, brought in for his England debut in place of Keaton Jennings, could only muster eight runs before being sent packing by Kemar Roach - his first Test wicket since October 2015.

Tom Westley fell for the same score and Root (136) was eventually bowled out by Roach, but only after sharing 248 with Cook in an impressive partnership.

Cook was still standing on 153 by the time play was called to a halt, by which point the hosts found themselves in strong control of the historic Test.
