England recover from the loss of three early wickets to fight back against New Zealand at lunch on day three of the second Test at Headingley.

England have fought back against New Zealand at lunch on day three of the second Test after losing early wickets at Headingley.

The hosts started the day 87 runs behind on 253-5 before reaching 350 all out to level the first-innings scores. New Zealand will start the afternoon session on 7-0.

England suffered a disastrous start to proceedings, losing three wickets inside the first six overs.

Ian Bell failed to add to his overnight score of 12 before he was caught by Mark Craig off the bowling of Tim Southee, who struck again soon after by dismissing Jos Buttler for 10. Moeen Ali was then sent back to the pavilion by Southee for just one run three balls later.

However, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood put up a dogged fight with the bat to lift England's spirits.

Wood hit 19 before he was bowled by Craig, while Broad was eventually out for 46 off 39 deliveries. James Anderson made 10 not out ahead of New Zealand's return to the crease.

Tom Latham (three not out) and Martin Guptill (four not out) will start the afternoon session out in the middle for the visitors.
