Moeen Ali contributes with both bat and ball as England hold a lead of 244 runs over South Africa at the end of the second day of the first Test at Lord's.

England have reached the close of play on day two of the first Test match with South Africa with a lead of 244 runs.

The day began with England skipper Joe Root looking to reach his double century, but after he went for 190, attention turned to the bottom order taking the home side past 400.

They achieved that with ease as Moeen Ali contributed eight boundaries on the way to a knock of 87, with Stuart Broad chipping in with 57 from 47 balls before England were bowled out for 458.

South Africa needed to make a positive start to their reply, but they lost wickets at regular intervals with Broad and Moeen both picking up two wickets apiece.

Dean Elgar made a solid 54 but Temba Bavuma and Theunis de Bruyn needed to reach the end of the day with their wickets still intact to keep their team on track to at least get close to England's total.

However, during the closing stages, James Anderson had De Bruyn caught behind for 48 to leave the tourists on 214-5, still 244 runs short heading into the middle sessions of the Test.
