England will require 238 runs from the final day after reaching 132-3 in their second innings against New Zealand.

England finished on 132-3 on the fourth day of the opening Test against New Zealand, trailing their hosts by 238 runs ahead of the final day.

After action was hampered on days two and three, the sides returned for a full day of cricket on day four, with New Zealand looking to extend the advantage they had gained so far in the Test.

Henry Nicholls, who began the day on 52*, remained at the crease impressively throughout his side's innings, reaching an unbeaten 145 to add to Kane Williamson's century earlier in proceedings.

Stuart Broad and James Anderson took three wickets each as the hosts declared on 427-8 with a lead of 369.

In came England, aiming to add more runs than the 58 they managed in their first innings. They started poorly, with Alastair Cook dismissed for two runs off 11 balls.

Mark Stoneman was next to bat, and he forged a solid partnership with Joe Root, as the pair each mounted half-centuries to push England on. Root's time at the crease petered out, however, as he was injured with a couple of balls remaining before being caught off a bouncer with the last play of the day.

England, who will resume with Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes, will be looking to mount a challenge on the final day, although New Zealand look to be close to victory with an innings left to play.
