England post a record ODI score of 408-9 against New Zealand at Edgbaston.

Centuries from Joe Root and Jos Buttler have helped England post their highest ever one-day international score of 408-9 against New Zealand at Edgbaston.

Root's knock was the fourth-fastest ODI century from an Englishman, while Buttler's was the second-fastest as the hosts enjoyed a rampant afternoon with the bat.

However, their time at the crease started disastrously as Jason Roy was caught by Martin Guptill off the bowling of Trent Boult with the first ball of the game.

Root and Alex Hales steadied the ship soon after, though Hales was eventually dismissed by Boult for 20 during the eighth over of the match.

Eoin Morgan joined Root out in the middle to boost England's score, and the captain wasted little time in attacking the New Zealand bowlers.

Morgan made 50 off 46 balls when he was sent back to the pavilion by Mitchell McClenaghan, while Root continued to dominate with the bat.

It took the 24-year-old just 71 balls to reach his century, and he went on to add four more runs before Boult and Luke Ronchi combined to end his reign. Ben Stokes then went for a disappointing 10 as Boult struck again, but Buttler kept up the fight for England with some explosive batting.

Buttler raced to his century off just 66 balls, with the batsman going on to make 129. His knock included 13 fours and five sixes before he was dismissed off the bowling of McClenaghan. Adil Rashid also made a significant contribution, scoring a dynamic 69 off 50 balls.

Debutant Sam Billings made just three, while Chris Jordan and Liam Plunkett contributed two and 13 respectively. Plunkett's score came from two sixes and a single.
