England have taken three wickets in a rain-affected opening day of the second Test against New Zealand at Headingley.

James Anderson made history by becoming the first English player to reach 400 Test wickets, but the Black Caps were able to recover by reaching tea on 123-3.

It was a miserable start to the day as lunch was taken early at 12.30pm and play eventually began one hour later.

Anderson struck first by forcing Martin Guptill to edge to Ian Bell inside the third over, with New Zealand having put just two runs on the board.

After Guptill left for a duck, Kane Williamson followed two balls later when he was caught for a duck by Jos Buttler off Anderson's delivery.

On 32-2, the players were called off the field as rain descended onto the Headingley pitch, but it was a rather brief spell in the pavilion as the teams resumed play at 3pm.

Ross Taylor was the next to fall after attempting a poor shot, which resulted in him trudging off the field from an lbw from Stuart Broad, but Brendon McCullum tried to get the Black Caps moving by hitting a six off the bowler in his first ball.

The captain managed to steady proceedings and he remains unbeaten on 41, while his batting partner Tom Latham has reached the interval unscathed on 51 runs.
