South Africa remain in control heading into day four of their second Test meeting with England, sitting 474 runs in front after frustrating their opponents.

England have been left chasing 474 to win their second Test meeting with South Africa after another difficult day for the hosts at Trent Bridge.

After crumbling during Saturday's session in Nottingham, losing their final six wickets for just 62 runs, England left themselves with it all to do on day three.

South Africa reached 343-9 in their second innings before declaring, with Hashim Amla top scoring by adding to his overnight score of 23, eventually reaching 87 before being bowled out by Liam Dawson.

Dean Elgar (80) and Faf du Plessis (63) also racked up half-centuries, though Quinton de Kock (1) fell cheaply as the Proteas pilled on a total of 268 runs to their tally.

England were then brought in to bat and almost got off to the worst possible start, with Cook seemingly being sent packing by Vernon Philander from the first ball, only to successfully review the lbw decision.

Four overs were bowled in all before the close of play - Cook and Keaton Jennings failing to get off the mark as England head for a series-levelling defeat.
