Joe Root scores his 11th Test century as England dominate day one to reach stumps on 311-4 in the first Test against India in Rajkot.

Joe Root scored his 11th Test century to help England to a strong start on day one of their first Test against India in Rajkot.

The tourists posted 311-4 at stumps, with Root contributing a knock of 124 off 180 balls, while Moeen Ali is just one run shy of his fourth Test century.

All eyes were on Haseeb Hameed as the 19-year-old made his debut at the top of the order alongside captain Alastair Cook, and he managed to last longer than his batting partner.

Cook, who has played down suggestions that he may retire after this five-match series, was the first to fall on 21 runs, leaving England on 47-1.

Hameed scored 31 off 82 balls before being trapped lbw by Ravichandran Ashwin, while Ben Duckett, who slipped to fourth in the order after Gary Ballance was dropped, scored 13 before being sent packing by Ashwin.

Root led the attack as his teammates fell around him, and India eventually dislodged the batsman in the evening session with the help of a review.

Umesh Yadav caught and bowled Root, and a review was needed after the bowler appeared to drop the catch, but the decision went the way of India.

As well as scoring his 11th Test hundred, Root became the first overseas player to score a century in India since Australia's Michael Clarke in 2013.

Ali and Ben Stokes will return to the crease for day two unbeaten on 99 and 19 runs respectively.
