Virat Kohli's century was in vain as India fell 24 runs short in their chase of 293 as New Zealand win the first ODI between the two sides in Napier.

Virat Kohli's hundred was not enough for India to beat New Zealand in the first one-day international in Napier as the hosts secured a 24-run victory.

A good team batting effort from the Kiwis had seen them post a target of 293, which seemed within reach when Kohli was in full swing, but he lacked support from the lower order who folded to 268 all out.

Kane Williamson had top scored with 71, while Ross Taylor (55) and Brendon McCullum (30) also contributed to a solid base set by the Black Caps which allowed Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi to play freely in the last 10 overs.

In-form power hitter Anderson smashed 68 off just 40 balls, while Ronchi made a quickfire 30 as they finished their 50 overs on 292-7, with Mohammed Shami the pick of the India bowlers with 4-55.

Anderson also had a role to play in reducing the visitors to 129-4, collecting the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan (32) and Ajinkya Rahane (seven), but MS Dhoni came together with Kohli to put on 95 for the fifth wicket.

India were in a strong position until Mitchell McClenaghan came back into the attack for a match-winning spell in which he dismissed Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja within the space of four balls, and then Kohli, his team's last real hope, followed soon after for 123, a knock which came off just 111 balls.

McCleneghan finished with 4-68 and his teammates did the rest, taking the final three wickets of the tourists for 31 runs as New Zealand drew first blood in the first of five matches with a narrow win.
