India take five wickets before tea to reduce South Africa to 56-5, putting them close to securing victory in the first Test of their series at Mohali.

India have taken a large stride towards securing victory in the first Test of their series against South Africa by reducing the Proteas to 56-5 in their run chase in Mohali.

AB de Villiers's men bowled India out for 200 in their second innings, leaving them a chase of 218 to win the first match of the series.

However, their innings got off to a poor start when substitute opener Vernon Philander was dismissed in the second over lbw to Ravindra Jadeja for one.

Francois du Plessis followed Philander back to the pavilion in the next over as he was caught by Ajinkya Rahane off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Matters got even worse for the tourists as Hashim Amla departed for a duck when Jadeja slipped a delivery through his defences to leave the Proteas 10-3.

Dean Elgar and De Villiers tried to rebuild the innings, but the South Africa skipper was the next player out when he was bowled by Amit Mishra for 16.

Elgar was the fifth victim of the innings when he was caught by Virat Kohli off the bowling of Varun Aaron for 16.

Stiaan van Zyl and Dane Vilas were left unbeaten at tea with the score at 56-5, with the tourists still requiring another 162 runs to win the match.
