Cricket World Cup matchday 24: NZ, India back in action after England shock

New Zealand and India both play on Saturday.

New Zealand and India will be looking to avoid the stunning upset that befell England, whose hopes of progressing smoothly to the World Cup semi-finals were dealt a blow at Headingley.

The hosts were chasing a modest 233 as they sought a victory against Sri Lanka that would have seen them leapfrog Australia in first place, but instead crashed to 212 all out.

New Zealand will move to the top of the standings if they can topple the West Indies at Old Trafford while India, who like the Black Caps are unbeaten so far in the tournament, tackle Afghanistan at the Hampshire Bowl.

Trent Boult has had a quiet tournament so far, taking four wickets in as many matches. The New Zealand left-armer will be looking to get rid of big-hitting West Indies opener Chris Gayle in Manchester.

Quote of the day

“We all know what's at stake and we just have to come and bring our 'A' game. It's as simple as that”
- Jason Holder

The West Indies captain knows his side need to deliver if they are to make the semi-finals.

Money ball

Jofra Archer took his fifth three-wicket haul in six innings, moving alongside Australia left-armer Mitchell Starc for the most scalps in the tournament. But he was upstaged by wily slinger Lasith Malinga. The express pace may not be there but the 35-year-old bowled with great control and guile, the pick of his incredible four for 43 a nostalgia-inducing yorker that struck Jos Buttler on the toe, a review showing the ball would have clattered into the stumps.

Top run-scorers

  1. David Warner (Aus) - 447
  2. Shakib Al Hasan (Ban) - 425
  3. Joe Root (Eng) - 424

What's next?

June 22: India v Afghanistan at the Hampshire Bowl, 10.30am
June 22: West Indies v New Zealand at Old Trafford, 1.30pm
