Doug Bracewell has been included in the New Zealand squad for the final Test against England in Auckland on Thursday.
A freak foot injury ruled the 22-year-old seamer out of the first two matches, which were both drawn to leave the series deadlocked heading into the decider.
Experienced bowler Ian Butler has retained his place in the squad, but only Bracewell is likely to dislodge either Trent Boult or Neil Wagner from the Kiwi pace attack.
Head coach Mike Hesson said: "Doug's availability creates a real battle for spots for this deciding ANZ Test against England.
"It also helps to manage the workload for a group of bowlers who have carried a heavy load during the first two Tests.
"We'll be keenly watching how he performs in the Ford Trophy tomorrow and how his foot comes through the game."
Bracewell will play for domestic side Central Stags in their Ford Trophy fixture on Tuesday in a bid to prove his fitness.
