The tourists, who lost the toss and were put into bat, made their way to 26 runs before captain Alastair Cook was caught by Peter Fulton off the bowling of Neil Wagner for 17.
Nick Compton finished the session with 34 runs to his name, while Jonathan Trott will start on 23 after the break.
The three-Test series is currently tied at 0-0 following a draw in the opening encounter in Dunedin.
