Brendon McCullum unhappy with New Zealand batting

Brendon McCullum believes that New Zealand wasted a good opportunity to beat England in the Twenty20 international at Old Trafford.

Brendon McCullum has claimed that New Zealand should have converted a promising start into a win following the 56-run Twenty20 defeat to England at Old Trafford.

Chasing 192 runs to win, the Black Caps were 89-3 at one stage of their innings but a lack of support for Kane Williamson, who top-scored for the tourists with 57, allowed England's bowlers to secure the win.

Despite paying tribute to England for another triumph following the 3-2 one-day international series win, McCullum was unable to hide his disappointment with New Zealand's batting.

"Some of our batting was pretty amateurish, to be honest. We got ourselves in a good position and we should have been able to chase down their total," he told Sky Sports News.

"Credit to England, they put us under pressure. They looked for wickets, as they have done throughout the series, and they were able to get hold of them, and our application wasn't quite right.

"We got off to a reasonable start but we weren't able to kick on and build more partnerships as the innings progressed."

McCullum will now begin a spell with Birmingham Bears in the T20 Blast.
