New Zealand have been left with it all to do in their third and final Test meeting with India, as they will head into day three requiring 529 runs to beat their opponents.

Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane helped the hosts to a healthy lead on Saturday following a shaky start, and they looked to build on their overnight score of 267-3 in Indore.

Kohli's innings was eventually brought to an end when trapped in front lbw by Jeetan Patel for 211, which surpassed his best score in Test cricket, while Rahane followed soon after for 188.

Rohit Sharma added a further 51 runs without being dismissed, at which point India declared at 557-5 and brought in their opponents to bat.

With nine overs to bat, New Zealand made up 28 runs on their opponents - helped by five given to them following a penalisation against Ravindra Jadeja for running on the pitch - with India unable to take any wickets in that time.

Tom Latham (6) and Martin Guptill began the charge, with the latter hitting two fours and a six on his way to 17, but the Black Caps still require a first-innings score of 357 to avoid the follow-on.
