Contrasting fortunes as Collingwood and Trott bow out

Trott’s Warwickshire thrashed Kent while Durham and Collingwood lost to Middlesex.

Former England batsmen Jonathan Trott and Paul Collingwood ended their illustrious playing careers in contrasting fashion on the penultimate day of the County Championship season.

While Trott celebrated Division Two glory after Warwickshire thrashed Kent, his 2010-11 Ashes team-mate Collingwood brought the curtain down on a losing note as Durham were beaten by Middlesex.

Warwickshire had already guaranteed an immediate return to the top flight of county cricket but capped their season with a trophy as they hammered fellow promoted side Kent by an innings and 34 runs.

Young opener Zak Crawley strengthened his burgeoning reputation with a batting 75 but his innings was a rare bright spot for Kent as they floundered to 179 all out.

Olly Stone proved why he has been recognised by England with a three-wicket burst as Kent failed to make Warwickshire bat again, depriving Trott of one final innings at Edgbaston.

Collingwood was given the opportunity but was dismissed for 10 as Durham collapsed to 109 all out in pursuit of 167 for victory at Chester-le-Street.

Mark Wood’s five for 94 helped skittle Middlesex for 355 but Durham lost wickets at regular intervals in their chase following an inspired performance from their visitors.

Worcestershire were unable to follow Lancashire’s lead and finished the campaign bottom of the standings after a seven-wicket defeat to Yorkshire at New Road.

Garry Ballance followed up his first-innings 194 with 60 in the second to steer the White Rose to their 137-run victory target.

Craig Overton took a hat-trick as Somerset battered Nottinghamshire by an innings and 146 runs at Trent Bridge.

Overton had Ben Slater, Samit Patel and Riki Wessels all caught by Marcus Trescothick at second slip off successive deliveries, just a day after Somerset team-mate Tom Abell took a hat-trick in Nottinghamshire’s first innings.

Jason Roy and Ollie Pope made centuries as county champions Surrey improbably took their match against Essex to a final day at The Oval.

Roy (128) and Pope (114) helped Surrey to 477 for five and a lead of 67 in the only match that was not concluded on Wednesday.

In Division Two, Glamorgan secured their first victory at Sophia Gardens in three years after defeating a battling Leicestershire by 132 runs.

The visitors looked to be sinking without trace after stumbling to 102 for eight but number 10 Dieter Klein made a counter-attacking 94 before he was last man out.

Craig Miles signed off his Gloucestershire career by hitting the winning runs to secure a two-wicket victory over Derbyshire.

Miles, who is joining Warwickshire next season, danced down the pitch to strike the winning boundary as Gloucestershire survived a late collapse to reach their target of 179.
