Alastair Cook praises the England team following the first one-day international against Sri Lanka.

Alastair Cook has praised the England team following their 110-run win in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka.

England scored 229 runs for eight in the match, which was limited to 32 overs per side due to rain delay. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 121.

Craig Kieswetter was the top scorer with 61, while Cook himself was dismissed after three balls with just five points to his name.

"It's a really good start, but let's not get too carried away about how I did or the team did,” he warned.

"It's just a good start and we have to keep our feet on the floor. We're not in it for personal plaudits, we're in it to win games of cricket.

"But I thought it was an outstanding performance from all our bowlers. For Jimmy [Anderson] up front to get them 15-4 and get their danger men out got us ahead of the game."

The fixture at the Oval marked the 26-year-old’s debut as ODI captain after Andrew Strauss resigned earlier in the year.

The teams meet for the second one-day international on Friday.
