Mark Ramprakash announces his retirement from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.

Surrey and former England batsman Mark Ramprakash has retired from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.

Ramprakash had forged a highly successful career in county cricket without ever managing to reach the same levels on the international stage.

His 25-year career has encompassed spells with Middlesex and Surrey, during which time he hit 35,659 runs - including 114 centuries - in 461 first-class matches at an average of 53.14.

He also boasts an impressive one-day record, scoring over 13,000 runs. However, his international form was not so good.

Despite playing 52 Tests for the national side, Ramprakash only managed two centuries and averaged just 27.32.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan paid tribute to the 42-year-old, saying: "The best compliment I can give him is that he's the best technician the English game has had in the past 20 years.

"He had the best movements at crease. Unfortunately he couldn't mentally get it right in the international game."

Ramprakash is one of only 25 players to have hit 100 first-class centuries, and he averaged over 100 in consecutive seasons for Surrey in 2006 and 2007.
