South Africa defeat Pakistan by a single run in the first of five one-day internationals between the sides in Sharjah.

South Africa have beaten Pakistan by one run in the first of five one-day internationals between the sides in Sharjah.

The Africans won the toss and chose to bat before going on to make 183-10 from all but one ball of their 50 overs.

In response, Pakistan were bowled out for 182 with just under four overs remaining.

Wayne Parnell (56) top scored for South Africa, while Graeme Smith (20), JP Duminy (20) and David Miller (37) also made modest scores with the bat.

However, five players failed to make double figures as the Proteas struggled at the crease.

Saeed Ajmal was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers with figures of 4-30, but Shahid Afridi also did plenty of damage as he ended with three wickets to his name.

Despite a duck for opener Nasir Jamshed, Pakistan made steady progress when it was their turn to bat thanks to some competitive knocks from their top order.

Ahmed Shehzad (58), Mohammad Hafeez (28) and Misbah-ul-Haq (31) all pushed their team towards the required target.

Pakistan's lower order then crumbled under pressure as the match entered the final few overs, with the final wicket of Mohammad Irfan (2) being taken by Morne Morkel.

Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe ended with two wickets apiece, while Wayne Parnell and Imran Tahir each had three to their names.
