The 37-year-old reached lunch unscathed on 142, but this morning he lost his batting partner Shan Masood, who was was sent packing by Tharindu Kaushal after scoring 125 off 233 balls.
Yesterday, the tourists were handed a mammoth task of reaching 377 runs to win, but centuries from Khan and Masood gave them a glimmer of hope.
Sri Lanka were handed a boost by the dismissal of Masood, but Misbah-ul-Haq was able to pick up where his teammate left off and contributed 27 to a 66-run unbeaten partnership by the end of the first session.
Pakistan are 321-3.
