Melbourne Stars secure a five-wicket victory over Hobart Hurricanes with just five balls remaining.

Melbourne Stars have defeated Hobart Hurricanes by four wickets to move up to second place in the Big Bash League table.

The Stars restricted the Hurricanes to 134 runs during their innings and they largely remained in control to secure the two points with five balls remaining.

The Hurricanes struggled from the off and they suffered the loss of Ricky Ponting for just eight runs when he was dismissed by Clint McKay.

Owais Shah got out cheaply for just one as Hobart were reduced to 25-3, before Tim
Paine and George Bailey restored some stability to the innings by taking their side to 99-5 with 26 balls remaining.

Scott Styris scored 24 runs off 17 balls but Melbourne continued to pick up wickets to restrict Hobart to just 134.

Melbourne suffered an early blow in their reply after they lost Luke Wright for one run and Hobart took advantage to restrict the Stars to just 38 runs off eight overs.

However, Rob Quiney and Brad Hodge went on the offensive in the ninth over by striking three sixes to regain control of their innings.

That resulted in Ben Laughlin being introduced to the bowling attack and it reaped immediate rewards as he took the wicket of Quiney for 35.

Hodge and David Hussey soon followed as Melbourne fell to 91-4, requiring 44 runs off 33 balls for victory.

That brought together the explosive pairing of Cameron White and Glenn Maxwell and the pair contributed a combined total of 41 runs off 33 balls to edge Melbourne to the win.

Both players were quickly dismissed but their quick flurry of runs was enough to see James Faulkner get his side over the line with less than an over remaining.
