Kevin Pietersen's knock of 62 helps Melbourne Stars beat Perth Scorchers to reach the Big Bash final for the first time.

Kevin Pietersen's knock of 62 helped Melbourne Stars beat Perth Scorchers by 11 wickets to reach the Big Bash final for the first time on Friday.

Shortly after the Scorchers went into bat, Marcus Harris was dismissed for one off the bowling of Daniel Worrall in the fifth ball of the contest.

English batsman Michael Carberry tried to help in the recovery, but he could only muster 13 runs off 12 balls before he was taken out by Worrall.

Carberry's countryman David Willey had a disappointing spell at the crease as he fell for a duck in the first ball that he faced off Marcus Stoinis.

Adam Voges top-scored with 52 runs, 36 of which came from sixes, while Michael Klinger contributed with 44 off 45 balls as the Scorchers ended 20 overs on 139-7.

In response, the Stars lost Luke Wright, who was taken out by his fellow Englishman Willey for just seven off 10 balls, but opener Stoinis kept things ticking by hitting 44 runs before getting trapped lbw by Brad Hogg.

England outcast Pietersen guided the attack as he stormed to a half-century, but he was bowled out by Joel Paris for 62 off 36 deliveries.

Despite failing to end the innings unbeaten, Pietersen's knock was vital as Peter Handscomb and David Hussey scored 15 and seven runs respectively to get the Stars over the line with 11 balls remaining.

The Stars will play Sydney Thunder in the final on Sunday.
