South Africa captain Graeme Smith announces plans to retire from international cricket following the third Test against Australia.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith has announced that he will retire from international cricket after his country's third Test against Australia.

Smith has been the captain of the Proteas' Test team for more than a decade having succeeded Shaun Pollock after the 2003 Cricket World Cup, while he has held the same position for the ODI team since 2011.

The 33-year-old has captained more Test matches than any other player in history and is also the most successful Test captain ever, winning 51 of his 104 matches.

Overall, he played 347 times for South Africa across all formats of the game, racking up more than 17,000 runs during his illustrious career.

The batsman was also renowned as a top fielder and holds the world record for number of catches in Test match wins from a non-wicketkeeper with 82.

South Africa currently trail Australia by 234 runs following day three of the third Test after the Aussies opted not to enforce the follow-on.
