South Africa claim series whitewash over Australia in Cape Town

South Africa beat Australia by 31 runs in Cape Town to earn a 5-0 series whitewash, despite David Warner's best efforts in their final meeting.

David Warner struck a century but could not prevent Australia from falling to a 5-0 one-day international series whitewash against South Africa in Cape Town.

The 29-year-old's impressive batting, which eventually came to an end after 173 runs had been racked up, was all in vain as the hosts did enough to seal a 31-run victory.

South Africa posted 327-8 from their innings, with Rilee Rossouw (122) and JP Duminy (73) putting on a strong fourth-wicket partnership to guide their side towards another triumph.

That came after a shaky start, in which the Proteas found themselves on 52-3 at Newlands - Quinton de Kock (12), Hashim Amla (25) and Faf du Plessis (11) all being sent packing by the Aussies.

Roussow and Duminy proved to be the key men, though, while David Miller also added 39 runs from 29 balls, before Australia were dismissed for 296.

That came despite Warner's solid batting, as the Baggy Green found themselves 60-0 and seemingly on their way to a consolation win, yet momentum soon shifted and South Africa were back in control.

Aaron Finch (19), Steve Smith (0) and George Bailey (2) all went, leaving the Aussies on 84-3, before Mitch Marsh and Travis Head both went for 35 and Joe Mennie for a duck.

It was a case of seeing things through for the hosts from that point on, as they did what was required to make it five from five in the ODI series.
