South Africa reach the end of day one of the second Test against Australia on 214-5 following the loss of two more wickets in the evening session.

South Africa have ended day one of the second Test against Australia on 214 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Australia began the day strongly by dismissing captain Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla early in the morning session, before the Proteas reached lunch on 64 runs.

The hosts made steady progress with Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis in blustery conditions, but Nathan Lyon managed to strike before tea to dismiss Du Plessis on 55.

The tourists managed to grab a crucial wicket in the evening session when a delivery from Lyon sent Elgar packing after he racked up 83 runs from 193 balls.

Quinton de Kock followed his teammate for just seven after a delivery from Steve Smith, but bad light eventually halted play, leaving the Proteas on 214-5 on the end of day one.

AB de Villiers (51 not out) and Jean-Paul Duminey (2) will resume at the crease tomorrow.
