An innings of 81 from AB de Villiers helps South Africa reach 279-8 with 10 balls remaining in a rain-affected first one-day international against West Indies.

South Africa have posted a score of 279-8 in their first one-day international with West Indies following a rain-affected innings in Durban.

Despite winning the toss, the hosts suffered an early double blow when Rilee Rossouw and Faf du Plessis both departed for ducks to hand West Indies the early initiative at 16-2.

However, the early dismissals brought AB de Villiers to the crease, where he and Hashim Amla put on a 99-run partnership for the third wicket before Amla fell for a run-a-ball 66.

With De Villiers accumulating runs at a solid pace, the aggressive hitting was left to David Miller, who hit seven fours and two sixes on the way to a knock of 70 runs from 68 deliveries.

However, the partnership was eventually broken up when Jason Holder nabbed the wicket of Miller (70), and De Villiers was stopped by Sulieman Benn 18 runs short of a century having hit 81 off 94 balls.

Farhaan Behardien (12), Jean-Paul Duminy (12) and Vernon Philander (4) were the next to go for South Africa, but Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel added six and two runs respectively as rain closed the innings with 10 balls remaining.
