South Africa climb back to the top of the world Test rankings thanks to a series-winning draw in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

South Africa have gone back to the top of the world Test rankings after drawing the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The result has seen the Proteas win the two-match series following their comfortable victory in the first Test in Galle.

Starting the final day on 38-1 and with a target of 369 to win, South Africa laboured their way to 104-2 at tea.

The tourists lost six further wickets in the evening session, but they were able to reach 159-8 at the close of play to claim a hard-earned draw.

Quinton de Kock top-scored for South Africa with a modest knock of 37, while Hashim Amla (25) and Vernon Philander (27 not out) were the only other batsmen to get past the 20-run mark.

Rangana Herath did most of the damage with the ball for Sri Lanka with five wickets in the final innings, though Dilruwan Perera also had the South Africans worried by claiming three wickets before stumps.
