Sri Lanka trail Pakistan by 108 runs at tea on day three of the first Test match in Abu Dhabi.
The Pakistanis extended their first-innings lead to 179 during the morning session, before they were bowled out for 383 just before lunch.
Sri Lanka began their second innings in a cautious manner, with openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva offering a stern defence against the Pakistan bowlers until the former was bowled by Junaid Khan for 24.
Kumar Sangakkara scored 14 off 36 deliveries as Sri Lanka edged their way to 71-1 at the break, with Pakistan struggling to find a second wicket.
Sri Lanka will resume the evening session with Sangakkara and Silva at the crease.
