Sri Lanka take five wickets in the afternoon session against New Zealand on day one to establish control of the second Test at Wellington.

Sri Lanka have fought back by taking five wickets in the afternoon session against New Zealand on the first day of the second Test at Wellington.

The tourists won the toss and elected to bowl first, but the Kiwis produced a resilient display in the morning session to thwart Angelo Mathews's side.

Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson continued their good form as they reached their 50-run partnership, while Williamson soon notched his half-century off 75 deliveries, which included eight boundaries.

However, Taylor soon fell for 35 when he was bowled by Nuwan Pradeep, and the 30-year-old's wicket sparked a collapse in the innings.

Skipper Brendon McCullum was out for a duck, while James Neesham added 15 before he edged Pradeep behind to leave the home side struggling at 161-5.

Williamson and BJ Watling tried to restore calm, but the Sri Lanka captain snagged the wicket of Watling for 11 and Williamson departed just an over later when he edged a delivery onto his own stumps.

Mark Craig and Doug Bracewell were left at the crease when tea was called with the score at 192-7.
