West Indies to make late decision on Chris Gayle fitness

Chris Gayle takes part in West Indies training for the first time since injuring his back last week, but remains a doubt for the New Zealand quarter-final match.

West Indies skipper Jason Holder has revealed that his side will wait until Saturday morning before making a decision on whether opening batsman Chris Gayle can play a part against New Zealand.

The 35-year-old is a doubt for the Cricket World Cup quarter-final clash having sat out the final pool match against the United Arab Emirates last week due to a back injury.

Gayle took part in training earlier today for the first time since receiving a pain-killing injection, and Holder admits that it will be touch-and-go whether he plays a part in tomorrow's match.

"Chris is out playing this morning," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "He's had an injection, nothing major. We'll see how he pulls up today and make a decision tomorrow morning.

"He's one of the most feared batsmen in world cricket. So to have Chris on my squad is a plus for anybody in a sense. We won the last game without him so I can't say we can't win without him. He's been a very good player for us over the years. But it's shown that we've got people to fit the bill."

Gayle racked up 215 runs against Zimbabwe during the pool stage of the tournament, which remains the highest score of any player to date.
