The West Indies remain 132 runs short of avoiding the follow-on having gone into tea on day three of the first Test against New Zealand at 176-6.

The West Indies face an uphill struggle to avoid the follow-on having gone into tea on day three of their first Test against New Zealand on 176-6.

Having suffered a collapse towards the end of day two, the West Indies were quickly under pressure again from a New Zealand side that had set them a first-innings total of 508 as the dangerous Chris Gayle went for 64.

Things got even better for the tourists when Marlon Samuels was dismissed LBW off the bowling of Tim Southee just two balls later, departing the crease having failed to trouble the scorers.

West Indies did manage to steady the ship after that, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Denesh Ramdin contributing a timely partnership of 72 runs to edge the hosts towards avoiding the follow-on.

However, Southee struck again for his third wicket of the day to send the sides into tea, Ramdin the man to be caught when just 11 runs short of his half-century.

Chanderpaul remains in the middle on 43, but he faces a tough ask in firing his side towards the 132 runs they need to avoid the follow-on.
