Dogged resistance from New Zealand sends their second Test against the West Indies into a fifth day.

The West Indies are on the brink of victory in their second Test against New Zealand after day four of the contest in Trinidad.

It took fierce resistance from the visitors to push the match into a fifth day, with BJ Watling and Mark Craig producing a 45-run partnership for the ninth wicket.

New Zealand were 257-8 in their second innings, leading the Windies by 18 runs with two wickets in hand and a full day of play ahead.

They added just 21 runs before the first break and lost opener Tom Latham for 36 to a Kraigg Brathwaite catch while left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn was bowling.

Kane Williamson reached a half-century from 166 balls before edging paceman Kemar Roach to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin for 52, with Benn catching out Jimmy Neesham to leave the visitors on 129-4 come lunch.

The Windies claimed an additional two scalps in the middle section, with Ross Taylor bowing out for 36 at the hands of Shannon Gabriel before Hamish Rutherford fell for 13.

The hosts were on the brink of an innings victory when Roach dismissed Ish Sodhi for 14 and Tim Southee for 15, as Watling and Craig narrowly survived through to stumps.

All will be decided in the third and final Test next Thursday.
