England captain Joe Root was out for just five for the second time in Yorkshire's LV= Insurance County Championship match against Sussex as off-spinner Jack Carson led a fightback for the hosts on the second day.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth – making a fifth half-century in six innings – made an opening stand of 90 at Hove as Yorkshire wiped out their first-innings deficit of 90.

But Carson, 20, then took three for 35 from 20 overs to get Sussex back in contention as Yorkshire reached 163 for five at stumps, a lead of 92.

Luke Wood and Danny Lamb both made centuries in career-best innings as Lancashire took full control of their match against Kent.

Lamb led the way with 125 while Wood produced an almost chanceless 119 in a record-breaking eighth-wicket stand of 187 before the visitors were finally dismissed for 525 at Canterbury.

Wood then took three for 23 as Kent slumped to 85 for four in response.

David Bedingham scored a career-best 257 as Durham took control against Derbyshire at Chester-le-Street with a first-innings score of 475.

Wayne Madsen made a half-century in reply but late wickets turned momentum back in Durham's favour as the visitors were reduced to 148 for five at the close.

James Bracey did his best to impress the onlooking England batting coach Marcus Trescothick as he helped Gloucestershire make a solid response to Hampshire's score of 470 at Southampton.

Bracey, 23, joined Kraigg Brathwaite to put on 88 for the second wicket before the West Indies opener fell late in the day, leaving the visitors on 114 for two.

Bracey, a reserve for England's tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year, will resume on 46.

Sam Robson narrowly missed out on his 25th first-class hundred to help Middlesex to a solid first-innings lead over Surrey.

The former England opener made 95 in a five-and-a-half hour stand to help Middlesex to 268, a first-innings lead of 114 at Lord's.

Surrey reached 105 for three at the close, led by England opener Rory Burns who was unbeaten on 54.

Danny Briggs and Craig Miles frustrated Essex at Edgbaston, putting on an unbroken 50 for the ninth wicket as Warwickshire replied to the champions' total of 295.

Simon Harmer and Peter Siddle took three wickets apiece to reduce the Bears to 198 but they could make no further inroads on the second day as the hosts closed on 243 for eight.

Adam Rossington did his best to spare Northamptonshire a major first-innings deficit against Glamorgan as his gutsy 76 put them within touching distance of avoiding the follow-on.

Replying to 407, the hosts slumped to 76 for five, but Rossington joined Saif Zaib in putting on 126 for the sixth wicket, and they reached 251 for seven by the close at Wantage Road.

Captain Joe Leach came in at number 10 to contribute 84 runs to Worcestershire's total of 436 against Nottinghamshire as they responded impressively from 216 for seven at New Road.

Nottinghamshire openers Ben Slater and Haseeb Hameed continued the theme of dominance of bat over ball in a relatively untroubled unbroken stand of 99 from 44 overs.

Half-centuries from Tom Abell and Steven Davies gave Somerset the upper hand over hosts Leicestershire on the second day.

Abell rode his luck at times in making 84, sharing a 112-run fifth wicket partnership with George Bartlett, before Davies contributed 59 to Somerset's first-innings total of 318, giving them an 85-run lead over the hosts.

Leicestershire reduced that to 37 before stumps but did so at the cost of three wickets as Hassan Azad, Harry Dearden and Marcus Harris fell cheaply.
