England's Matt Walls is said to be "alert and talking" after he was involved in a sickening crash during the second heat of men's 15km scratch race qualifying at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion was one of eight riders who were involved in the collision on Sunday, as he flew over a barrier into the crowd alongside his bike.

Medics worked to treat Halls for over 30 minutes before he was admitted to hospital, with fellow rider Matt Bostock of the Isle of Man also joining him for further assessment.

A Team England spokesperson reassured BBC Sport that Walls was "alert and talking" after the horrific incident, during which members of the crowd were also injured.

One audience member was pictured drenched in blood as they were taken away in a wheelchair, and the remainder of the morning's session - which only involved one further men's tandem B sprint semi-final - was rescheduled.

Three-time European champion Walls - who is yet to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games - became Olympic champion in omnium and also took the silver medal in the madison at Tokyo 2020.
