Team England 25km points race winner Laura Trott has admitted that she was surprised she was able to take gold having had to recover from a kidney infection earlier in the week.
Trott said that after a disappointing penultimate sprint she had to put everything she had into winning the final lap, finishing ahead of Elinor Barker of Wales to take the gold medal.
"I can't actually believe it after the week that I've had. My training was going really well but [the kidney infection] set me back," she said.
"I had nothing to lose and just gave it my best shot. When I saw that Elinor was one point ahead of me, I thought 'right, I'm dying, but there's no way I'm losing this race.' I just gave it a little bit more to the finish line and I won.
"If I'd had the legs I would have gone for the [penultimate sprint] so I didn't have to race the last one, but that's the way racing goes. I was in the wrong position and didn't get any points, so I was lucky enough that I got it at the end."
Trott won two gold medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
