David Millar says he is determined to put his drugs-related past behind him and help Mark Cavendish win gold in the road race at this year's Olympics.

David Millar has said that he won't be a hindrance and is determined to help Team GB win medals at this summer's Olympic Games.

The 35-year-old was selected for the five-man road race team despite his previous drug bans.

Millar served a two-year suspension from 2004 to 2006 after admitting to taking banned blood booster EPO.

He will now compete in the road race on the opening day of the Games on July 28 and will be hoping Mark Cavendish can win gold for Team GB in the event.

"I've already missed two [Olympics]. The first one I was in a drunken haze and as far away from the world of sport as humanly possible, but in Beijing (in 2008) it was pretty hard to avoid how hard it was not being there," Millar said.

"I made the right decision to put myself up and I'm very proud that the team has seen that I won't be a hindrance and that I can be a positive influence.

"I want to help and I want to help Mark win the gold medal."

The Scotsman and Cavendish will be joined by Bradley Wiggins, Ian Stannard and Chris Froome in the road-race team.

All five men are currently competing in the Tour de France.
