Cyclist Wouter Weylandt has died from injuries sustained during a crash during the Giro d’Italia.
The incident occurred as the Belgian descended from the Passo del Bocco mountain pass approximately 25km from the finish line of the third stage of the race.
It is thought that Weylandt’s pedal became caught on a wall, leading him to fall around 60m.
TV footage showed the 26-year-old bleeding heavily and lying unconscious following the crash. Medics administered cardiac massage at the scene before rushing him to hospital by helicopter.
