Great Britain's Mark Cavendish had to spend the night in intensive care after suffering broken ribs and a collapsed lung in the Ghent Six.

The 36-year-old was forced to leave the arena on a stretcher after a crash in Sunday evening's final event, with Lasse Norman Hansen also going down but able to continue.

The full extent of Cavendish's injuries have now become clear, with the Deceuninck–Quick-Step team releasing a statement to the cyclingnews website.

Cavendish's team said: "Following his crash at the Ghent Six Day, Mark Cavendish was taken to the Ghent University Hospital where he was kept overnight.

"Examinations showed that Mark has suffered two broken ribs on this left side and has a small pneumothorax, both of which have been treated with medication and he has been kept in the hospital for observation.

"It is expected that Mark will be discharged either later today or tomorrow morning, and will then undergo a period of recuperation. Everybody at Deceuninck-Quick-Step wishes Mark a speedy recovery."

Cavendish's wife Peta Cavendish took to social media to provide another update on her husband's condition, adding: "Thank you for all the messages. Mark is spending the night in ICU following todays crash.

"Thank you to all the medical staff that helped us today and also to the @deceuninck_qst staff that sprung into action to help me and the kids."

The overall classification at the Ghent Six was won by Kenny De Ketele and Robbe Ghys after Cavendish's crash. body check tags ::
