Ed Clancy tips Sir Bradley Wiggins for Rio success

Sir Bradley Wiggins is tipped to reach peak form in time for the 2016 Olympics in Rio by Ed Clancy.

Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy has backed Sir Bradley Wiggins for success at Rio 2016.

Wiggins had been set to race in the Track World Cup in London this week, but he has instead chosen to focus on preparing for April's Paris-Roubaix one-day classic, meaning that Clancy has been restored to the team pursuit squad.

Despite a lack of preparation before the Commonwealth Games, Wiggins helped his country to silver and Clancy is hopeful that he can produce his best form once again, with just a few months of training before Rio.

"Any doubts we had about Brad and his ability to get back to the track in a short space of team were put at ease at the Commonwealth Games," The Northern Echo quotes Clancy as saying. "Brad was pretty exceptional. In such a short space of time he managed to turn his road form into good track form.

"From what I've seen of Brad in the past, leading up to Beijing (in 2008), the way Brad was riding in the Commonwealths wasn't far off his best. If he gives himself a few months, I think it's quite an exciting prospect.

"It might even be the way forward for Brad to have a short run-in time. Brad is someone who might benefit from being massively fit aerobically."

Clancy has won gold in the team pursuit at the past two Olympic Games and won silver for the event in this year's Commonwealth Games.
