David Brailsford confirms Rio attendance

Dave Brailsford confirms that he will continue in his role as performance director of Team GB's cycling squad.

Dave Brailsford has revealed that he will lead the Great British cycling team into the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Reports had claimed that 48-year-old was considering stepping down from the position in order to concentrate solely on his role as principal of Team Sky.

However, Brailsford has now insisted that he never had any intention of stepping down.

"I'm not sure that I was ever going to let go and walk away," said Brailsford. "In my mind I like to think that there was a safety valve where you can just go 'OK, let's look at where we are going'.

"We might structure it slightly differently, we might think about longer-term succession planning.

"I'd like to think we're building something which is sustainable; coming up to Rio if I just disappeared off sideways nobody would really notice and it would just carry on."

Brailsford has been in charge of Team GB's cycling unit at three previous Olympics.
