British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford says that Bradley Wiggins "deserves to be recognised" with a knighthood for his recent wins at the Tour de France and London 2012.

British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford believes that Bradley Wiggins deserves to be knighted.

Wiggins, who last month became the first Briton to win the Tour de France, claimed Olympic gold in the men's time trials today.

The 32-year-old is now Team GB's most decorated Olympian of all time with seven medals.

Brailsford said: "I've got no idea what criteria they use to hand out [knighthoods], but if anybody is deserving of one, I think Brad is, given other people that you see walking around with a 'Sir' before their name.

"I'm sure he's on a par, if not above certain other people. Chris Hoy's achievement was absolutely brilliant and that was well, well deserved, but Bradley now deserves to be recognised, for sure."

Hoy was knighted after winning his fourth Olympic gold in Beijing.
