Sir Chris Hoy admits that his first and most recent gold medals are the highlights of his 18-year cycling career.

Britain's most successful Olympian of all time Sir Chris Hoy has pinpointed his first gold medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and his sixth in London as the highlights of his 18-year cycling career.

Hoy announced his retirement on Thursday afternoon and he has admitted that he is "fortunate" to have accumulated so many career highs.

"It's tough to pick one special moment of my career - so I'm going to pick two," BBC Sport quotes Hoy as saying. "Athens - stepping onto the podium, hearing my name read out and then hearing 'Olympic champion' after it.

"To me that was what my career was all about. I thought nothing could compare to that but in London, to end my career with my sixth gold medal in the nature of the keirin, was a really special moment.

"I could go on all day - fortunate I've got so many great memories and I've had so much fun. I still feel the same. I'm going to cycle for the rest of my life and encourage others to take up the sport."

Two of Hoy's six golds came in the London Olympics last summer.
