Great Britain's Jason Kenny powers to a record-equalling sixth Olympic gold medal with victory in the men's keirin.

Great Britain's Jason Kenny stormed to a record-equalling sixth Olympic gold medal with victory in the men's keirin in Rio this evening.

Kenny's triumph sees him draw level with former teammate Sir Chris Hoy as the most successful British Olympian of all time, moving clear of five-time gold medallists Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Bradley Wiggins.

The 28-year-old picks up his third gold of the Rio Games having previously triumphed in both the team sprint and the individual sprint.

Kenny was in danger of being disqualified before the race had even begun after he and Malaysia's Azizulhasni Awang overlapped the durney bike millimetres before they were allowed.

Both riders were permitted to stay in the race, but more drama followed on the second turn as Germany's Joachim Eilers also overtook the durney, resulting in an almost unprecedented second false start.

It was third time lucky in the end, though, as Kenny powered through on the final lap to claim his historic sixth gold and seventh Olympic medal overall, meaning that only Wiggins has now won more.

Matthijs Buchli of the Netherlands claimed silver, while Awang picked up bronze.
