Tom Pidcock has secured a third gold medal for Team GB with a superb victory in the mountain bike cross-country event.

The result comes amid a mini gold rush for Team GB, following on from Adam Peaty's emphatic victory in the pool and synchro gold for divers Tom Daley and Matty Lee.

With his victory Pidcock, 21, becomes GB's first ever mountain bike gold medallist and also notches up the first cycling medal for GB in Tokyo.

The youngster took a defining lead after the third lap of the 28.25km course in Izu, around 70 miles south-west of Tokyo, finishing 20 seconds clear of Switzerland's Mathias Flueckiger.

A tight fight for the bronze medal eventually went the way of David Valero of Spain, who finished 34 seconds back of Pidcock with a final time of 1:25:28.
