Geraint Thomas confirms his 2018 Tour de France victory by crossing the finish line in Paris, becoming the third British cyclist to win the race in the last seven years.

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas has become the third British cyclist in seven years to win the Tour de France.

The 32-year-old joins four-time champion Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins in winning the race, while also becoming the first ever Welshman to do so.

Thomas's victory was confirmed on Sunday afternoon, as he cruised over the Champs Elysees finish line well ahead of the chasing pack in the general classification stakes.

Alexander Kristoff held off the challenge of John Degenkolb and Arnaud Demare to win the 21st and final stage, but it was Thomas who was left with the biggest smile in the French capital after a memorable few weeks, crossing the line arm in arm with teammate Froome.

There was no change in terms of placing or time gaps for the top 10, with the Team Sky ace boasting a one minute and 57 second lead over closest challenger Tom Dumoulin.

Froome was a further 33 seconds behind, while Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk completed the top five.

Elsewhere, Peter Sagan earned a record-equalling sixth green jersey as winner of the points classification, drawing level with German sprinter Erik Zabel.

Tour de France final standings

1. Geraint Thomas (83h 17m 13s)
2. Tom Dumoulin (+1m 51s)
3. Chris Froome (+2m 24s)
4. Primoz Roglic (+3m 22s)
5. Steven Kruijswijk (+6m 8s)
