The top seed found himself in trouble as he dropped the opening set to the world number 50, who averaged 104.95 in moving closer to a surprise win.
However, with the second set at 2-2, Woodhouse threw his worst leg of the match, and he never regained his rhythm as the 2021 champion only lost one further leg.
While Price will be dissatisfied with his performance, the Welshman averaged between 92 and 94 in each set, his consistency ultimately wearing Woodhouse down on the Alexandra Palace stage.
In the match of the night, Canadian David Cameron came from two sets behind to post a 3-2 victory over Ritchie Edhouse, who missed six darts for the match.
The drama continued into the fifth set as Cameron miscounted when throwing for the match, subsequently seeing Edhouse check out 60, but he held his nerve with three 140s in the following leg to earn his place in the last 64.
Steve Beaton's 32nd successive outing at a World Championship ended in defeat as the veteran succumbed to a 3-0 loss to Danny van Trijp.
Although Beaton got four legs on the board, he was far from his best as his Dutch opponent comprehensively outscored him to prevail on his debut.
