Michael Smith: 'I can beat Michael van Gerwen'

Michael Smith sees no reason why he cannot beat semi-final opponent and world number one Michael van Gerwen en route to the Grand Slam of Darts title.

Michael Smith has warned Grand Slam of Darts semi-final opponent Michael van Gerwen that he fully intends on following up his Adrian Lewis scalp en route to the title on Sunday.

The 25-year-old beat two-time world champion Lewis 16-11 in Wolverhampton on Saturday to reach the last four of a major tournament for the first time.

Smith acknowledges that 'Jackpot' - who suffered a host of missed doubles - "battered" him in the scoring stakes, but warns world number one Van Gerwen that he will produce a complete performance this afternoon.

"I'm over the moon," he is quoted as saying by PDC.TV. "Adrian was the better player - he battered me - but he let me in at the crucial times and I took my chances.

"He could have been six or seven legs up but I knew if I was going to win that I had to take my chances, and I did that when they came and it's a massive relief.

"I don't think my game was there tonight but I finished well and there's no reason if I put it all together that I can't win this tomorrow."

The Dutchman thrashed Kim Huybrechts 16-4 later in the night to keep alive his hopes of adding the Grand Slam to his collection of major titles.
